The Royal Commissions into banking and the Robodebt scandal shows what happens if people don't feel safe to speak up or listen to the 'no' in the room. This session explores the neuroscience of psychologically safe workplaces. How can the SCARF and TEAM models from the NeuroLeadership Institute help us create speak up cultures?

Jürgen Schmechel, was born 1960 in Hamburg, Germany as the second son to his parents. He lived, studied, worked and married in Hamburg – to then be raising two sons himself. In 2004 his family moved to Australia to learn and live in a different culture. Jürgen is a keen observer of human psychology, he is a master in NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), Ericksonian Hypnosis and a certified Results Coach. Over the past 30 years Jürgen realised that he and his wife are doing things differently in their marriage from others. Some of their behaviour was conscious, some more on the unconscious level. And with more and more relationships all around the world deteriorating, Jürgen decided to bring his wisdom and mentoring to the people. He started his Inspiring Relationships in 2017 and published a controversial book in 2019: “Why Money Is More Important Than Sex”. His mission is to inspire thousands of men and women to stay in loving, respectful relationships. Which has a ripple on effect to their Children and the World. More information here

Deep Ecology with John Seed | SFN session February 13 at 5:30pm

Deep Ecology is a philosophy of nature which sees that underlying the environmental crisis there is a psychological or spiritual disease stemming from the illusion of separation between humans and the rest of the natural world.

The late Arne Naess, Emeritus Professor of Philosophy from Oslo University, Norway who coined the term "deep ecology" pointed out that our "ecological ideas are not enough to protect the Earth, we need ecological identity, ecological self". It was Naess’s view that in order to heal that illusion of separation while embedded in the anthropocentric culture which reinforces it at every turn, what was needed were “community therapies”. 

Working with Joanna Macy and others, since 1986 John Seed has been developing and facilitating experiential processes that dispel this illusion This workshop teaches participants processes that lead to a deepening of our felt sense of connection with the living Earth and I think that facilitators of other personal growth etc may find some of the processes we’ll explore useful in their own work.

John Seed is founder of the Rainforest Information Centre. Since 1979 he has been involved in the direct actions which have resulted in the protection of the Australian rainforests. He has written and lectured extensively on deep ecology and has been conducting experiential deep ecology workshops around the world for 25 years. In 1995 he was awarded the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) by the Australian Government for services to conservation.

30th Anniversary

Come for dinner with the SFN community Recollect, share and celebrate our experiences, stories and approaches in facilitation. Inspire our future as facilitators and a networked community of practice.

Monday 14 November at 5:30PM.   (PS Following the next session on October 10 with Rollo Browne) Face to Face: UTS Building 10, Lvl 5, CB10.05.580. In early 1992, Maria and RIchard Maquire hosted a meeting at Zac's cafe in George St, Sydney.  This was the very first meeting of a community of practice which has now continued every month for over 30 years.  We believe it might have also been the first blossoming of such a community of practice in Australia.  The Australian Facilitators Network held its first conference a few years later.  For this night, we will host a potluck dinner and Richard and Maria will talk about what inspired their initiative.  Come along with a plate and share your own introduction to the practice of facilitation.  Bring a story, a photo, or something to post on the History Wall to celebrate our community.  We are building an image bank to present at the event. What is your Theory of Change? Rollo Browne

This session is for us to explore our working assumptions about how people change.

Facilitation is necessarily about change in one form or another. Embedded in our facilitation design and group leadership are assumptions about how change occurs, what assists it and what gets in the way. There are many change models out there, I use 3 or so different ones depending on the context. My provocation is that there is one at the centre of your practice and this is the one that matters.

Come prepared to discuss 1-2 relevant situations. What kind of change was involved? What model of change were you using when it went well? What was your response when it didn't work the way you had planned? How did your theory of change evolve, if it did? There is no right answer but we can learn from each other. Each person has to come to terms with their underlying theory of change as it evolves. Most of us are still working it out. The main value is that we can refine what we pay attention to. This applies as much to life as it does to work.

SFN August: Holding Democracy - with Susan Benedyka

 

The 2022 federal election will be remembered for electing the largest number of independent candidates. How did they mobilise thousands of volunteers, many who had never been involved in a political campaign before? What are the facilitation principles holding the groundswell of community support steady over three federal elections? And should we start considering how to hold the space in the centre open at the next federal election to continue to challenge the two party system which isn’t serving Australia well?
