SFN 30th Anniversary Dinner - November 14 at UTS 5:30pm

30th Anniversary
Come for dinner with the SFN community

Recollect, share and celebrate our experiences, stories and approaches in facilitation. Inspire our future as facilitators and a networked community of practice.
Monday 14 November at 5:30PM.   (PS Following the next session on October 10 with Rollo Browne)
Face to Face:
UTS Building 10, Lvl 5, CB10.05.580.

In early 1992, Maria and RIchard Maquire hosted a meeting at Zac's cafe in George St, Sydney.

This was the very first meeting of a community of practice which has now continued every month for over 30 years.  We believe it might have also been the first blossoming of such a community of practice in Australia.  The Australian Facilitators Network held its first conference a few years later.

For this night, we will host a potluck dinner and Richard and Maria will talk about what inspired their initiative.

Come along with a plate and share your own introduction to the practice of facilitation.

Bring a story, a photo, or something to post on the History Wall to celebrate our community.

We are building an image bank to present at the event. If you have something to add, please email your image to elyssebeth.leigh@icloud.com at least a week before the event.

What is your Theory of Change? Rollo Browne

Monday 10 October 2022 l 5:30PM.
Face to Face:
UTS Building 10, Lvl 5, CB10.05.580.

This session is for us to explore our working assumptions about how people change.

Facilitation is necessarily about change in one form or another. Embedded in our facilitation design and group leadership are assumptions about how change occurs, what assists it and what gets in the way. There are many change models out there, I use 3 or so different ones depending on the context. My provocation is that there is one at the centre of your practice and this is the one that matters.

Come prepared to discuss 1-2 relevant situations. What kind of change was involved? What model of change were you using when it went well? What was your response when it didn't work the way you had planned? How did your theory of change evolve, if it did? There is no right answer but we can learn from each other. Each person has to come to terms with their underlying theory of change as it evolves. Most of us are still working it out. The main value is that we can refine what we pay attention to. This applies as much to life as it does to work.

SFN August: Holding Democracy - with Susan Benedyka

The 2022 federal election will be remembered for electing the largest number of independent candidates. How did they mobilise thousands of volunteers, many who had never been involved in a political campaign before? What are the facilitation principles holding the groundswell of community support steady over three federal elections? And should we start considering how to hold the space in the centre open at the next federal election to continue to challenge the two party system which isn’t serving Australia well?

More information here

Join Susan Benedyka, independent Senate candidate for Victoria, Indi campaign member for Cathy McGowan + Helen Haines with Sandy Killick, Lead Educator, Democracy Matters in a discussion about facilitation practices for democratic participation.

 Regenerate Australia

Face to face session with Dimity Podger and Carli Leimbach

Monday 11 July 2022  5:30PM.
Face to Face:
UTS Building 10, Lvl 5, CB10.05.580

PS Be COVID safe.  Don't come if you have any symptoms.

Join us for a session where you will experience the Our Community Vision Workshop, designed by WWF-Australia for communities to explore their vision of a regenerative future and consider ideas for regenerating community and place. The workshop begins with the screening of the powerful short film*, Regenerating Australia, created by Regen Studios in partnership with WWF-Australia. The film acts as inspiration for communities to then explore regeneration through a series of facilitated group discussions and collective visioning work.

The workshop focuses on:

• Building relationships and connectivity to each other and to your place;
• Creating the space for participants to imagine “our community vision” and share it with others; and

• Exploring the potential for regeneration and regenerative projects in your local area.

We hope you leave inspired and invigorated by experiencing and learning an activation for community-led regeneration. At the close of our evening together, we would love to reflect with you on the process and your experience, bringing insights into the evolution of resources for communities. As a digital takeaway, receive a comprehensive Workshop Guide that provides step-by-guidance and suggestions for you to plan, facilitate and host a successful Our Community Vision workshop.

Watch the trailer here

The film is based on a four-month listening campaign with a diverse group of Australians who shared their hopes and dreams for the country’s future. It is a new story for our nation: a story of empowerment. A story of solutions. A story of regeneration.

Your facilitator is Dr Dimity Podger, Regenerative Communities Project Manager, with the Innovate to Regenerate, Panda Labs team at WWF-Australia. Dr Dimity Podger is a learning designer, leadership development facilitator, sustainability educator and budding regenerative practitioner. Her current work with WWF  builds on her research in education for sustainability, participatory community development, and recent intensive education with Regenesis Institute. She resides on the lands of the Wodi Wodi people, on Dharawal Country.

Your host is Carli Leimbach, Innovation Manager with Innovate to Regenerate, Carli is also a member of the SFN Convening Group.
